The Rarest Truth

Why an Unheated Sapphire with Inclusions Outvalues a Heated 'Clean' Stone

The Rarest Truth

In the modern gem market, rarity is the ultimate driver of value. While heat-treated sapphires are common and widely available, completely natural, unheated sapphires are exceedingly rare, accounting for less than 5% of all sapphires sold globally.

But why is the presence of inclusions in an unheated stone so highly prized? Let us explore the economics and aesthetics of natural authenticity.

The Standard Treatment Almost all sapphires undergo heat treatment before they reach the jewelry store. The stones are heated in high-temperature furnaces to temperatures near their melting point (up to 1800°C). This treatment achieves two things: - It dissolves rutile silk, thereby improving the clarity of the stone. - It intensifies the blue color by forcing iron and titanium ions into the crystal lattice.

While heat treatment is an accepted industry practice, it is essentially a form of artificial enhancement. It masks the stone's true, natural state.

The Premium of the Unheated An unheated sapphire has been taken from the ground, cut, and polished—nothing more. Its color and clarity are exactly as nature created them. Because they are so rare, unheated stones command a massive price premium, often costing 50% to 100% more than heated stones of similar color and weight.

But how do gemological laboratories prove a stone is unheated?

They look at the inclusions.

If a stone is heated, its internal inclusions show signs of thermal alteration. Rutile needles will appear partially dissolved or "broken," and mineral inclusions like zircon will show signs of melting, often surrounded by circular tension cracks. In contrast, an unheated sapphire will contain perfectly intact, sharp rutile needles and pristine mineral crystals.

The Value of Inherent Character An included, unheated sapphire represents a double layer of rarity: 1. It is unheated, meaning it is in its original, pure state. 2. Its inclusions serve as a natural fingerprint, guaranteeing its authenticity and providing a unique visual identity that cannot be replicated.

When you purchase an included, unheated Ceylon sapphire from IncRare, you are not just buying a piece of jewelry. You are investing in a rare geological artifact whose very "imperfections" are the proof of its extraordinary value.
