Why Inclusions Are the Most Honest Thing About a Gemstone

Gemstones are geological miracles, but for generations, the traditional jewelry industry has conditioned consumers to view them through a lens of sterile perfection. The standard metric of value has long been clarity: the fewer the inclusions, the higher the price.

But at IncRare, we argue that this philosophy is not only outdated—it is a disservice to the natural history of the Earth.

The Honest Gemstone An inclusion is not a flaw. It is a signature. When you look at an unheated Ceylon sapphire and spot a delicate network of rutile needles (often called "silk"), you are looking at proof of natural origin. You are looking at a gemstone that has remained untouched by human ovens, preserving a crystal structure that took millions of years to grow under intense heat and pressure.

Heated gemstones—which make up over 95% of the sapphires on the market—have had their internal worlds artificially melted. The high temperatures dissolve the rutile silk and heal the microscopic fractures, leaving behind a stone that may be clear, but is chemically and structurally altered. It has lost its character. It has lost its memory.

Geological Time Capsules An included sapphire is a time capsule. Some inclusions contain tiny mineral crystals like zircon or apatite, which were trapped inside the sapphire host as it grew. These mineral inclusions can be radiometrically dated, telling us exactly when the sapphire was born (often around 550 million years ago, during the assembly of the Gondwana supercontinent).

To own an included gemstone is to own a direct, unmodified piece of primordial Earth history.

The Rise of Character Stones A new movement of connoisseurs and designers is shifting the narrative. They look for stones with "personality"—sapphires that exhibit unique patterns, two-phase gas-liquid bubbles, or vivid internal structures that play with light. These stones are being referred to as *Character Stones*.

Because no two inclusion layouts are ever identical, owning a character stone means owning something truly unique. A heated, flawless blue sapphire can be replicated by another heated, flawless blue sapphire. But a sapphire with a constellation of internal silk is one-of-a-kind. It is a work of abstract art, painted by tectonic forces over half a billion years.

It is time to look past the industry's narrow definition of clarity and start appreciating the beautiful, honest truth of nature's fingerprint.
